Your Kindness Corner
In Dawson Creek, a long-standing community organization continues to support individuals and families facing food insecurity with compassion and care.
Dawson Creek Food Bank Society is dedicated to providing food for individuals β including families, singles, elderly, and unsheltered members of the community β with the aim of eliminating hunger.
With deep roots in the Dawson Creek community, the organization began as a modest βfood cupboardβ around 1986. By the late 1990s, calls for food assistance were becoming more frequent. In response, a more structured food bank began operating around 1998. With the support of dedicated volunteers and financial contributions from local churches, services have steadily expanded to meet the growing needs of the community.
π Why It Began
The Dawson Creek Food Bank Society was created in response to increasing need within the community.
As more individuals and families began reaching out for support, it became clear that a more organized and sustainable approach was necessary. What began as a small, grassroots effort has grown into an essential community resource built on compassion, volunteerism, and local support.
𧑠Who They Serve & Their Impact
The Dawson Creek Food Bank Society serves individuals of all ages, races, ethnicities and nationals, citizenship, colour, religion, sex (sexual orientation), income source, and mental or physical abilities.
Their impact is seen every day through the people they support. From individuals navigating unexpected life changes to families facing financial hardship, the food bank provides essential relief when it is needed most.
One story that stands out is that of a mother with five children who came in tears seeking assistance after her life took an unexpected turn and she had no source of income β a powerful reminder of how quickly circumstances can change and how vital community support can be.
π¨ Current Initiatives & Urgent Needs
The Dawson Creek Food Bank Society is currently facing a critical need for a larger and more accessible space.
Their current location:
Requires navigating stairs, making it physically demanding for volunteers
Has a waiting area that can only accommodate 15 people
Serves up to 60 visitors in a single day
Shares space with a soup kitchen and dining area
This overcrowding creates challenges for both visitors and individuals with accessibility needs.
Their goal is to secure a new location with a single-floor layout and improved accessibility. Once secured, they plan to invest in essential equipment such as a floor scale, walk-in coolers, freezers, and a warehouse area to better manage food supplies.
π€ How You Can Support
There are many ways to support the Dawson Creek Food Bank Society:
β’ Volunteer β ongoing support is essential to daily operations
β’ Donate β monetary contributions help purchase food for hampers
β’ Help expand access β additional volunteers would allow extended hours beyond 3PM and potentially Saturdays
Every contribution helps ensure individuals and families in the community have access to essential food support.
"19 years ago, I lived in Fort St. John, B.C. and I had only one can of kidney beans to feed my
8-month-old son, while my daughter and I stayed hungry. I needed help, but I had too much
pride to ask for it. Eventually, I reached out and told myself that one day, I would give back.
When I first started volunteering at the food bank in 2022, I had no intention of being there
full-time. However, I was offered the position temporarily until we find someone else.
I lacked confidence and was nervous about taking on the role. I never imagined that
I would be doing this. Coming from a poverty family and addictions, I can relate to our
clients and understand where they are coming from. I strive to improve our food bank, and
we receive many requests that we do our best to fulfill. It is the relief that I see on our
clients faces after receiving help that makes me want to continue to thrive. I have gained
humility and compassion through this food bank and I am grateful to be a part of it."
Dawson Creek Food Bank Society continues to stand as a pillar of support in the community β ensuring that no one has to face hunger alone. π
