🐾 Non-Profit Spotlight: North Halton Kitten Rescue
Your Kindness Corner
In the heart of Halton Hills, a dedicated group of volunteers has been quietly changing the lives of the community’s most vulnerable felines for over a decade.
North Halton Kitten Rescue (NHKR) was founded in July 2011 to rescue stray and abandoned kittens in Halton Hills. Shortly after its formation, the organization expanded its mission to include cats of all ages — ensuring that no feline in need would be left behind.
NHKR is a registered non-profit charity made up entirely of dedicated volunteers who work together in a supportive and respectful environment. They provide an affordable and compassionate alternative to purchasing or informally obtaining kittens or cats. Every rescued feline is nurtured and socialized in foster homes until healthy, spayed or neutered, and ready to be adopted into a loving family.
💛 Why It Began
North Halton Kitten Rescue was created out of necessity.
When the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals shelter transitioned to a private model, the most vulnerable kittens and cats were left without an organization mandated to care for them.
Recognizing this urgent gap, a group of compassionate community members stepped forward — and NHKR was born.
🐱 Who They Serve & Their Impact
NHKR serves the Halton Hills community by taking in stray and abandoned felines who have nowhere else to go.
They focus specifically on cats who need them most and do not take in owned pets. In addition, NHKR works alongside Halton Regional Police and the Sheriff’s Office to provide care for felines whose owners are no longer able to do so.
As a proactive rescue, NHKR strives to take in both kittens and their parents to ensure all fertile felines are spayed or neutered before adoption or return. They also practice TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return), helping manage and reduce the local stray population responsibly and humanely.
Their impact is seen not only in the lives saved — but in the families formed and the long-term reduction of feline overpopulation within the community.
🚨 Current Initiatives
NHKR is currently collaborating with other Halton Hills community groups to advocate for the construction and operation of a local Animal Shelter in the Town of Halton Hills.
This initiative would provide essential infrastructure and support for vulnerable animals across the region.
🤝 How You Can Support
There are several meaningful ways to support North Halton Kitten Rescue:
• Volunteer at their used book sales at the Georgetown Mall
• Donate gently used books for fundraising
• Make a monetary donation (NHKR receives no financial support from the Town)
• Adopt a feline — or even two — and give them a forever home
Every act of support directly helps rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome cats in need.
“NHKR was created out of necessity and has developed into a respected organization of eclectic like-minded volunteers who work together to rescue feline lives and prepare them for new homes — thereby enriching the lives of people who adopt the previously discarded and unwanted.”
North Halton Kitten Rescue reminds us that when a community steps forward, even the smallest lives can be given the biggest second chance. 💛
