🦉 Non-Profit Spotlight: Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue
Your Kindness Corner

In partnership with Heroes 4 Wildlife (a nonprofit organization)
In Durham Region, injured and orphaned wildlife have a critical place of care — supported through a powerful partnership.
Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue (SCWR) is dedicated to the rehabilitation and care of injured, orphaned, and at-risk wildlife in Ontario.
Although Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue is not a registered non-profit organization, in 2025, SCWR formally partnered with Heroes 4 Wildlife, a registered non-profit organization. Together, SCWR and H4W support Durham Region’s only wildlife hospital — ensuring injured and orphaned wild animals receive the medical care they need to survive and thrive.
SCWR contributes by donating its land, facilities, hospital equipment, and other essential resources that make this lifesaving work possible.
Wildlife rehabilitation in Ontario is licensed by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). While this work is regulated, it does not receive government funding. As a result, operations rely entirely on donations, sponsorships, and educational programming to sustain the wildlife hospital.
🌿 Mission & Commitment
SCWR provides high-standard medical care and supportive housing for wildlife patients, ensuring they have the best possible opportunity to recover and return to their natural habitats.
Beyond rehabilitation, they are deeply committed to fostering awareness and education about Ontario’s native wildlife, their ecosystems, and the environmental challenges they face.
Through hands-on volunteer programs and community engagement, SCWR emphasizes respect, safety, and sustainability — building meaningful connections between people and wildlife.
💛 What Inspired the Work
Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue was inspired by a deep love for Ontario’s wildlife and a recognition that many animals face increasing threats due to habitat loss, environmental hazards, and human activity.
Seeing a lack of dedicated wildlife care facilities in the area, the founder sought to create a sanctuary where injured wildlife could receive expert medical attention — while also offering the community opportunities to learn, connect, and contribute.
🐾 Who They Serve & Their Impact
SCWR serves both wildlife and the communities that coexist with them.
They currently rehabilitate:
Birds of prey (including owls, hawks, and falcons)
Mammals
Reptiles
Each year, hundreds of animals receive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and — whenever possible — release back into the wild.
Through:
Educational programs
Live demonstrations
Summer camps
Community outreach
They inspire conservation awareness and empower individuals to protect local wildlife and habitats.
🚨 Current Initiatives & Immediate Needs
SCWR is expanding its volunteer program, offering more opportunities both with animal care and behind the scenes — including roles for high school students to earn community service hours through their summer camp program.
To support daily wildlife care, they currently need:
Paper towels
Garbage bags
Pillowcases & baby blankets
Newspaper
Frozen meat (no breading or seasoning; freezer burn acceptable)
These items directly support hygiene, feeding, and comfort for wildlife patients.
They also maintain an Amazon Wishlist with additional supplies.
🤝 How You Can Support
There are many meaningful ways to get involved:
• Volunteer — animal care, meal prep, wildlife hotline support and transport, education, admin, or fundraising
• Make a single or monthly donation
• Book a Wildlife Experience (May–October) and meet animal ambassadors
• Attend onsite programs and summer camps
• Support their current fundraising campaign: Mabel’s Labels (select Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue)
• Follow on Facebook and Instagram
• Sign up for their newsletter at www.sopercreekwildlife.com
Because this licensed wildlife rehabilitation work receives no government funding, every donation, sponsorship, and program booking directly supports the operation of Durham Region’s only wildlife hospital.
“This is the best experience I have ever had. The work environment was great, the hands-on nature of working with these animals was amazing, and knowing I was helping wildlife was so rewarding.”
— SCWR Volunteer
Through partnership, dedication, and community support, Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue and Heroes 4 Wildlife are ensuring that wildlife in Durham Region are never left without care — and always given the chance to return home to the wild. 🦉💛
