Your Kindness Corner
In Toronto, a dedicated organization is helping young people experiencing homelessness find safety, support, and a path forward.
Youth Without Shelter (YWS) is a charity dedicated to empowering young people experiencing homelessness to reach their full potential. Their vision is simple but powerful: ending youth homelessness one step at a time, one young person at a time.
Located in North Etobicoke, YWS provides a safe, supportive environment where youth can rebuild their confidence, develop life skills, and move toward independent living.
YWS offers emergency shelter and comprehensive support programs for youth aged 16β24 who have found themselves without stable housing. Their services go far beyond providing a bed for the night β offering guidance, counselling, education support, and employment training to help young people build stable futures. Through a trauma-informed, youth-centered approach, they focus on each young personβs strengths and resilience while supporting their transition toward independence.
π Why It Began
Youth Without Shelter was founded in 1986 by a group of teachers and guidance counsellors who saw firsthand that many students were struggling without safe housing.
At the time, there were very few resources available for young people in suburban Toronto facing homelessness. Motivated by the urgent need to protect and support vulnerable youth, these educators came together to create a safe place where young people could access shelter, guidance, and support.
What began as a grassroots effort has grown into an organization that has helped thousands of youth find stability, confidence, and opportunity.
𧑠Who They Serve & Their Impact
Today, Youth Without Shelter serves young people aged 16β24 experiencing homelessness or housing instability across the Greater Toronto Area.
Many of the youth they support face complex challenges such as family breakdown, abuse, financial hardship, or a lack of stable support systems.
Their programs provide both immediate and long-term support through:
Emergency Residential Program
Stay in School Program
Life skills development
Mental health supports
Employment preparation
Housing and after-care services
By combining shelter with education, counselling, and life-skills development, YWS helps youth move beyond crisis situations and build stable, independent lives.
