In 1994, One of my co-workers, Pierre, also a service member heard while at church about a relief mission in Juarez Mexico. The missionaries were from Oshawa and had been in contact with their congregation seeking support for the mission and the children. Long story short, Pierre and I were also members of Scouts Canada. As Scouters we contacted located outlets requesting donations for the mission. We were surprised at the response, we received shoes, socks, clothing, some toys and hygiene kits (toothbrushes and such items). The Military Police also donated bicycles that were in there lost and found. Several of the bikes needed repair, which was my job. In the end we were able to donate thirty fully functional bikes. Now you wonder how we were to get all these materials shipped to Mexico. Then we found out that the congregation in Oshawa had acquired roofing trusses, as the mission was also building a school that needed a roof. So, we figured we would just send our stuff with their roofing materials. Pierre and I were able to get approval to have all the, the donations and the roofing materials loaded on a Training Flight as Humanitarian Relief Effort. Pierre and I were authorized to deliver the materials to the mission as Ambassadors for Scouts Canada. As a follow up, we were told that the children loved the shoes and that the Missionaries endured many hours trying yo locate the children who had ridden off on the bikes.
